YMCA Texas Youth and Government, YAG as it is known to its thousands of participants and alumni, is part of a nationwide youth-led civic engagement and academic program for middle school and high school students from public, private and homeschools. The program offers its participants, or delegates, the opportunity to experience the legislative and judicial process, through debate, mock trial and bill creating.
Mary Dell Lorenz, a service-oriented and civic-minded Christian and homeschooling pioneer formed the Richardson Youth and Government delegation in 2005 to offer DFW homeschoolers the opportunity to become responsible citizens and future Christian leaders. The Richardson delegation is one of only two homeschool delegations in the state of Texas.
The Richardson homeschool delegation offers students the opportunity to learn how to discuss current events and debate in a manner that is God-honoring. We support the Y's goal to create an environment in which students can increase their political awareness and understanding while learning the meaning of social action through an actual hands-on experience in government.
Richardson YAG meetings happen weekly. This has proven to help with students in learning life lessons from belonging to a group, adds support during the Dallas District conference, the State conference in Austin, and potentially the national conferences; as well as helping to create social opportunities and lasting friendships.
